The moving parts of the machine can be divided into rolling elements, linear moving parts or a
combination of both. With the development of rolling bearings about 110 years ago, rolling contact
became the standard method of achieving rolling motion. A great technological revolution was followed.
Rolling contact not only saves kinetic energy, but also keeps the frictional resistance to a minimum, thus
greatly improving the performance of the machine.
Through its own unique technical strength, THK solved the problem of rolling contact linear motion that
was once considered difficult to solve, and in 1972 became the first company in the world to develop and
commercialize linear motion (LM) rails.
THK's LM Guides enable ultra-high precision operation of machine tools and industrial robots, as well as
enabling semiconductor manufacturing equipment to operate in submicron devices. Recently, the system
has also been applied to liquid crystal production lines, railway passenger cars, disabled assisted vehicles,
medical equipment, skyscrapers and residences, and recreational facilities. The scope of use of the LM
Guide has broken through all previous restrictions.
